Sigh,
the negative voter strikes again. I wouldn't mind the one -5 vote on this tile if it didn't affect my tile's rating so drastically. What I consider to be my best tile yet, and used to have a rating that reflected this, now is my second to lowest rated tile. I have an idea for a solution to propose to the administrators: how about making the votes of the "regulars" more weighty when calculating tile ratings on the newbie quilts? This way, a single rude vote would not be as destructive. Another idea is to require a person to make one or more tiles before they are able to vote. Even better, limit how far negative a person can vote to the highest positive rating that they have recieved on a tile (i.e. Bob's highest tile is rated 3. Therefore, Bob can vote as low as -3 but not -4 or -5). The thinking here is that a person who is qualified to judge a tile as bad enough to deserve a -5 should be capable of producing a +5 tile themselves. Even better than this would be for administration to track the voting habits of newbies, question the judgement of extremely low votes on tiles that don't clearly deserve a negative rating, and take corrective action of some type (i.e. remove the negative vote and/or question and discipline, if necessary, the irrational voter). Well, I think that's enough rant for now. :) My apologies if I sound overly irritated, it's not intentional but might be partly explained by my nasty used car salesman experience today.

Re: Sigh,
some good suggestions there i think... i especially like the idea of placing limitations on who can vote negatively.

as for making a regular's vote carry more weight than a newbie... casting 100 votes makes a person a regular, and anybody can do that in a short time on the newbie quilts if they choose.

i also like your idea of requiring that a person create a tile or two before they've earned the right to vote. that would fix the problem of un-registered wiseguys playing with scores i think. and it wouldn't stop anyone who really has an opinion from expressing it in a post.

anyway, i think/hope there will be some changes in the way things are done when the site is revamped this year.
