I'd really like to know how you do stuff like in the top left corner... although I don't understand why there's all that mess on the check in tile.

it's there because I prefer not to include the 'overlay' stuff

It's the sort of stuff I used to do in school, on the tables and stuff :)
Things look much cooler when drawn with a soft pencil on the smooth tabletop...

Definately love the upper-left corner. Just hope I was able to continue it well enough into my tile to the left. It was a really complex border, but fun to try to extend.
tip
If I were you, I would try to use harder edged brushes and selections to make crisp edges. Your images will look a lot less blurry that way.
