You definately understand tiling. Add some more detail, and you'll get fives -- in newbie quilts, at least -- for sure. Mainquilts and especially invite-only quilts also require excellent layout, ideas, and themes to get fives. This site is mostly about practice, not scores; but, that's something to keep in mind for the future.
